Application route

  1. Build a university list based on academic fit, cost, funding, testing, and programme outcomes.
  2. Apply to each university through its required portal and submit academic, test, essay, recommendation, and financial documents.
  3. After accepting an SEVP certified school, receive Form I-20 and pay the SEVIS I-901 fee.
  4. Complete the DS-160, pay the visa application fee, schedule the interview, and prepare to explain the study plan and finances clearly.
02

Visa essentials

  • University or college study normally requires an F visa. A visitor visa is not a substitute for degree study.
  • The school records the student in SEVIS and issues Form I-20 after admission and financial review.
  • The current student visa application fee is USD 185, with possible additional issuance fees based on nationality.
  • A new student visa can be issued up to 365 days before the programme start, but entry is normally limited to 30 days before that date.
03

Work and after study

  • Active F-1 students can generally work on campus for up to 20 hours per week while school is in session.
  • Off campus work requires a specific authorised basis such as CPT, OPT, or qualifying economic hardship. Speak to the designated school official first.
  • Post completion OPT can provide up to 12 months of work related to the field of study. Eligible STEM graduates may seek a 24 month extension.
04

What to double check

  • Funding offers can differ sharply even between similarly ranked universities.
  • Never begin off campus employment before the required authorisation is active.
  • Keep application details, social profiles, the interview explanation, and the intended programme consistent and truthful.
